08May17 – Slow and steady, everyday more is being completed on our Maple Forest Cottage. The foyer bench with it’s radius curves and plethora of parts is taking shape. This weekend we carpet tiles the Gym. Wow! It’s no longer a dumping ground but a (clean) dedicated space for working out. We used Mohawk’s High Score tile in Enviro. It’s just what we needed in there – neutral, yet subtly interesting.
18 more days – Can Steve do it? Whatever is done is that much more than I had expected. Kudos to my future husband, he’s getting so much accomplished on this detail – driven house.
03May17 – Steve is busy, busy, busy, moving fro one project to another. With 24 days til the wedding he just may get our Maple Forest Cottage finished!
20March17 – Steve has spent the last 6 days (5 of them with a nasty cold)
- Making the master window seat bookcases only to re-do them so they are centered on the wall. The original Maple Forest Cottage has them set over to the window side and we thought we could live with that. Until we realized we couldn’t – too off center for us.
- Helping install, prime, paint, etc the master window seat. Now to find new fabric for the cushion (what I bought 2 years ago doesn’t cut it) and try to have that done by our wedding in May. Larry delivered it and the foyer settee base last Tuesday. That was so exciting – we’ve been waiting literally, years, for these two pieces! Steve will “now” finish the settee with it’s curved maple & cherry top and lacquer the wood.
My Gingerbread house is D-O-N-E for this year. OMG, 4 months of my life constructing this little replica (almost) of our Maple Forest Cottage. It’s time to move on to other things! I am pleased with how it came out, however, and enjoyed bringing it to life. I’ll store it in the mud room up on top of the red storage cabinet I got last month.
One by one we’re dealing with the final things on our punch list…..
10Mar17 – Steve is under the wire to get all Our Maple Forest Cottage odds and ends finished up. We’ve set our wedding date for May 27th and the deal is the house will be “done” by then. So after a couple of months off from working on the house, Steve is back in the saddle tackling those not-so-exciting finishing touches.
I, meanwhile, am still working on my gingerbread house! Ha! Just need to add the porch/deck railing, add the snow, and put a bow around it and it’s done!
My long awaited Rojo Cabinet from Crate and Barrel finally arrived – on my Birthday no less! How very exciting – I’ve been imagining that in my mud room for about 3 year now, working on Steve to go with a red cabinet. His ‘yes’ was a wonderful way to turn ah, 64. Ugh…..
02Sep16 – Happy Labor Day Weekend! Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September and pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Did you know that it was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894? Work has been around a long time…..
We’ve been enjoying Summer on the mountain and our Maple Forest Cottage. It’s really home now. Work has slowed down as we are so near the end of construction and other responsibilities have taken priority.
31Jul16 – Bit by bit, our Maple Forest Cottage is coming into it’s own. The kitchen shoe mold and all knobs and pulls are in. Steve’s working on the laundry room railing as I write.
And the dining room chairs were delivered last week, just hours before we were going to entertain our best buddies from the Florida Keys! Our first dinner in the dining room was wonderful. We even had two other mountain friends over to join the four of us the next night. I’m thinking there will be a lot of good memories made around this dining room table!
Steve & I went on our 6th Rim Hike of the year and so far it is our favorite: Patton’s Table near Mount Mitchell off the Blue Ridge Parkway. We spent a good amount of time hiking through what I call The Enchanted Forest – it was like being in a fairy tale hobbit land. I’ve included some pics of that, too.
17Jul16 – Steve installed the crown moulding over the kitchen cabinets this weekend. Just when you think the MFC couldn’t get any more spectacular, a finishing touch makes such a difference. It’s all in the details – the look is fab.
03Jul14 – Happy Fourth of July Weekend to all! (Be safe out there!) We’re lying low for the weekend- working on “house-things”, of course, and taking it slow for the day. But, tomorrow I’m off to Maine to see my Grand kids for 4 days! I’m so ready for a trip off-of-the-rock and to see my son & his family. So looking forward to it.
Back at our Maple Forest Cottage…. Steve is finishing up the remaining cabinet fronts and lacquering more trim boards, still! Here’s where we’re at today:
25Jun16 – It’s been an exciting week. We are installing our cabinet drawer & cupboard fronts after, get this, 2 (that’s t-w-o) years since we met with our first cabinet maker to build our kitchen cabinets. Now, if that isn’t a lesson in patience, I don’t know what is…………….Ahhh, it’s so exciting to see how beautifully it’s coming out. I just sit at the sitz bank for moments at a time just lost in reverie admiring our kitchen.
We’ve also been saving “rescue Mountain Laurels” and a red maple as well.
Our Fifth Rim Hike of the year was last Saturday. It was a strenuous climb to the top of Potato Knob, but so worth it. The views were spectacular!
So, we continue to be busy, busy, busy. What else is new?!
06JUn16 – Steve’s helping Larry, our cabinet maker, along by going to his shop and bringing back unlacquered cabinet fronts, etc as they’re ready and doing the rest of the work here. It’s helping to speed up this ungodly – long process. Little by little……
There’s a new home site being excavated on the mountain and the word is out that there are mountain laurels for the taking before they get trashed. Why did I think I had the time to transplant 4 of them? Trying to “Save the Laurels” I guess.
Two of 4 holes are dug. Two more to go; moving 2 lilac bushes from where they’re not happy to the two dug holes, and putting in two of the laurels in the lilacs spots, then planting the 2 other laurels in the two ready- to-be-dug holes. If that seems like a mouthful, image getting it done!
